Recap: Summer Program 2011: Viking Village

Intensive Life & Social Skills Instruction for Adolescents and Young Adults

Program Overview

No matter where a person falls on the autism spectrum, social and life skills are key to successful, independent living. Haugland Learning Center’s summer program is designed to provide those students ages 10-21 practical experience in introducing and refining these skills.

Placements

Socially higher functioning students (e.g. Asperger's, PDD-NOS diagnoses) will participate in ASPIRE programming.

Socially lower functioning students (e.g. autism, SBH diagnoses) will be part of PLAN programming.

All students will be grouped by age and ability into small groups for morning instructional sessions (see programs). In the afternoon, both groups will spend time in Viking Village, a mock community which includes a bank, salon, bakery, arcade, hobby shop, and art studio to practice job and consumer skills. All instruction is designed to meet the individual needs of each student.

Programs

PLAN students ages 10-21 will be in self-contained classrooms that focus on the following components throughout the week: social skills, recreation and leisure skills, applied functional academics, pre-vocational skills, and daily living/personal care skills. Students will earn money for task completion and pro-social behaviors that they will then spend in the afternoon as consumers in Viking Village.

ASPIRE students, ages 10-21, will be in self-contained classrooms that will shift focus from week to week. Units will include social skills, employability skills, grooming/self-care, and money skills. Students will work as employees of Viking Village, and will rotate work stations for a small wage. Money earned will be used at the end of camp for a community-based activity.
